It's off to the races! The Capital City Senior Games return Feb. 25 to March 17. Presented by the City of Tallahassee, the games are open to active adults age 50 and older and feature competitions designed for all skill levels. Last year 742 athletes – 330 women and 412 men – from 50 Florida cities and four other states (Georgia, Alabama, Indiana and Ohio) participated in 21 different sports.

Registration is underway online at Talgov.com/SeniorGames or by phone at 850-891-3875. The registration fee for the first event is $15 and includes a t-shirt and two tickets to the closing Celebration of Athletes dinner. Each additional event is $3. Venue fees apply for some events.

The list of sports for the 17th annual Capital City Senior Games includes a 5K race, archery, bag toss, basketball, billiards, cycling, darts, disc golf, golf, horseshoes, powerlifting, racquetball, swimming and track & field. Bocce, bowling, pickleball and table tennis offer opportunities to compete in singles, doubles and mixed doubles; tennis offers doubles and mixed doubles competition. There are also four non-competitive events: a one-mile fun walk, mountain biking, water aerobics and punt, pass & kick. Winners take home gold, silver and bronze medals in each age division.

Nine athletes who participated in the 2025 games were in their 90s. Sixty-four athletes were 80-89 years old, and the five youngest athletes were 50 years old.

Like the Olympics, the Capital City Senior Games begin with a Torch Run and end with a Celebration of Athletes. The Torch Run and first event Fun Walk kick things off on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. at Cascades Park, 1001 S. Gadsden St. The Celebration of Athletes is on Tuesday, March 17, at 5:30 p.m. at the Tallahassee Senior Center, 1400 N. Monroe St. Participating athletes are invited to bring a guest.

Organized by the City's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department, the Capital City Senior Games are presented in partnership with Tallahassee Senior Center & Foundation, Capital Health Plan, Audiology Associates of North Florida, Tallahassee Friends of Our Parks Foundation, Leon County Government and Visit Tallahassee.

The Capital City Senior Games are sanctioned by the Florida Sports Foundation and give local athletes a chance to qualify for the Florida Senior Games State Championships and the National Senior Games. Tallahassee is among 21 Florida cities that hold senior games.

At last year's Celebration of Athletes at the Tallahassee Senior Center, Nick Gandy of the Florida Sports Foundation urged his fellow senior athletes to "keep practicing and stay active" until the next games. "We are never too old to go for the gold."

If you're interested in volunteering at this year's games, contact Toni McDonald in the City's Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department at 850-891-3835 or toni.mcdonald@talgov.com.
