Class Descriptions
Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years old)
Builds basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and young children ages 6 to 36 months become comfortable in the water so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. These basic skills include adjusting to the water environment, showing comfort while maintaining a front or back position in the water and demonstrating breath control, including blowing bubbles or voluntarily submerging under water.
Instructor to student ratio is 1:10.
Preschool (3 to 5 years old)
Gives young children ages 3-5 a positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety, survival and foundational swimming concepts. Skills are age-appropriate, helping participants achieve success on a regular basis while in a class environment with their peers.
Instructor to student ratio is 1:6.
Youth (6 to 12 years old)
Based on a logical, six-level progression that helps swimmers 6-12 years old develop their water safety survival and swimming skills. It is designed to give participants a positive learning experience.
Instructor to student ratio is 1:6.
Adult (13 years and older)
These classes are designed to teach teens and adults basic and intermediate swimming skills. In addition, water safety skills are taught to increase personal comfort levels around aquatics facilities.
Instructor to student ratio is up to 1:10.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I register in person? Yes - our offices at Trousdell Aquatics Center are open for in-person registration Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00am - 7:00pm; Thursday from 3:00 - 7:00pm and Weekends from 10:00am - 4:00pm.
What is the cost? $54.00 per participant (Monday - Thursday 8-lesson session) | $27.00 per participant Saturday Only 4-lesson session
What if it rains? Classes are NOT automatically canceled during inclement weather. Generally, the first thunderstorm day is used to cover safety topics and is NOT considered a cancellation. In the event a class is canceled, a makeup class will be scheduled on the following Friday. The decision to cancel a class will be made at the class time or very shortly before. An attempt will be made to contact everyone via email in the event classes are cancelled in advance.
What should I wear? Proper swimming attire is required. Male and female swimmers of all ages must wear actual bathing suits. “Basketball style” shorts are allowed. Female suits can be one or two-piece, however, sports bras and thongs are not permitted. All children in diapers must wear a swim diaper.
Refund policy: Refunds will be issued upon request for cancellations made at least 10 days before the registered session starts. Requests made later than 10 days before the session starts will only be issued if the registered participant provides medical documentation of an injury or illness.

Swim Lesson Voucher Program & Public Assistance Discount
To take advantage of the City’s youth activity discount for families who are on public assistance, register in person and bring current proof of assistance for the child being registered. The discounted rate is $11.00 per session.
Private Swimming Lessons
The City of Tallahassee only offers small group swimming lessons. However, the Tallahassee Swim School does offer private and semi-private lessons at some City aquatics facilities. If you are interested in private lessons, please contact the Tallahassee Swim School at 850-668-2636.
