Oak Ridge South Water Main Replacement

As part of its commitment to ensuring reliable service, the City of Tallahassee is planning a utility improvement project in the Oak Ridge South neighborhood (see map of project limits below). The project includes the replacement of approximately 3,700 linear feet of existing potable water mains, fire hydrants, and other components.

This project represents the significant investment by the City to maintain and improve its infrastructure system. Construction on the project is anticipated to begin in the next six months, with construction taking approximately 4 to 6 months to complete. Project updates will be posted here.

Roadway Impacts

During construction, the roadway in the work zone will be restricted to one-way traffic with a flagman. Access to residences will be maintained. The closed areas will be comprised of short sections of roadway within the project area and will shift as sections of the work are completed. After utility construction is complete, the impacted lanes of roadways within the project area will be restored per Leon County requirements, and all other surfaces disturbed during the project will be restored to existing or better condition.

Water Service Impacts

Customers will experience intermittent water outages when the new mains are tied into the existing system and when existing services are reconnected to new services. Every effort will be made to keep outages as short as possible. Notice will be provided to affected residences for planned outages at least 24 hours prior to the outage.

Fact Sheet

  • What is the project’s scope?
The Oak Ridge South Water Main Replacement project includes the replacement of existing potable water infrastructure within the Oak Ridge South Subdivision on Twin Oak Drive, White Oak Drive, Oakview Drive, Water Oak Drive and Tall Oak Drive. The project will replace approximately 3,700 linear feet of existing 4-inch and 6-inch diameter water mains with 4-inch, 6-inch, and 8-inch water mains and associated valves, services, meters, fire hydrants and other components.
  • What are the benefits of this project?
This project will replace aging water system infrastructure to reduce service interruptions caused by maintenance and repair activities. This will allow the City to continue providing reliable, quality service for area businesses and residents. The project also will enhance fire protection in the area by increasing capacity of the system by upsizing the mains and adding additional hydrants.
  • Who is managing/administering the project?
Design Project Manager: Brian Moody, City of Tallahassee – Underground Utilities and Public Infrastructure
  • When will the project begin and how long it will last?
The project is currently in the design phase. The project is expected to be advertised for bids in December 2021, and construction is expected to begin in May 2022 and last for approximately 4 to 6 months.
  • What will the contractor’s working hours be?
The contractor’s work hours will be 8 a.m. to sunset, Monday through Saturday.
  • Are road closures expected?
Travel lanes will be closed within the work zone, but one lane will remain open. Access to homes will be maintained throughout construction as the work zone progresses throughout the project limits.
  • What can be expected in terms of restoration?
Most of the work will occur in the roadway. All disturbed areas will be restored to existing or better previous condition, including replacement of sod, curbs, driveways, etc., where impacted by construction activities. The existing asphalt will be patched after the utilities have been installed, and the roadway will be restored per Leon County requirements after the completion of the utility project.

If you have questions or comments regarding these planned activities, please contact Brian Moody with the City’s Underground Utilities and Public Infrastructure department at 850-891-6163 or brian.moody@talgov.com.
