Old Bainbridge Water Main Replacement

In line with its commitment to providing best-in-class utility services, the City of Tallahassee is gathering information related to the replacement of potable water infrastructure within portions of the Old Bainbridge Road corridor between Tharpe Road and Fred George Road. The purpose of this project is to replace approximately 9,000 linear feet of water mains as well as valves, fire hydrants, water services and meter settings. This investment will improve the City’s ability to continue to provide safe, reliable drinking water and fire protection. You can see a map of the project limits below.

map of the project area

The City has contracted with a design consultant to design these improvements, and the land surveyor that is a part of the consultant’s team, SS&A, has been in the area since July 31, 2023, collecting data such as right-of-way and utility easement boundaries; location, size, and depth of existing utilities; location of physical improvements within the right-of-way/easements; and topographic information. The initial survey is nearly complete; however additional survey work, including obtaining the location and size of trees that may be impacted by the project, is anticipated.

A community meeting about this project was held on Oct. 16, 2023, at Transformation Church. Thank you to everyone who attended.

No construction activity are occurring at this time, and more information will be provided as the project proceeds.

What is the project’s scope?

The Old Bainbridge Road Water Main Replacement Project includes the replacement and upsizing of the existing water infrastructure within portions of the Old Bainbridge Road corridor between Tharpe Street and Fred George Road. Specifically, there are two sections of water main to be replaced. The northern section extends from Cottage Grove Road to Ashby Hill Road. The southern section extends from Tharpe Street to Stone Road. (See Location Map)

The purpose of this project is to replace approximately 9,000 linear feet (3,000 linear feet in the northern section and 6,000 linear feet in the southern section) of water mains as well as valves, fire hydrants, water services and meter settings. This investment will improve the City’s ability to continue providing safe, reliable drinking water and fire protection. The project is proposed ahead of Leon County’s resurfacing project, which will occur after the completion of the utility work.

What are the benefits of this project?

This project will replace undersized and aging utility infrastructure and reduce service interruptions due to maintenance and repair activities. It will allow the City to continue providing safe, reliable drinking water and fire protection for residents.

Who do I contact if I have questions about this project?

Design Project Manager: Brian Moody, City of Tallahassee – Water Utilities Engineering, 850-891-6163, brian.moody@talgov.com

When will the project begin, and how long it will last?

The project is currently in the design phase, and construction is proposed for spring/summer of 2024. Construction is estimated to take approximately 6 to 9 months.

Are road closures expected?

During the construction phase, lane closures are expected to occur within the work zone.

Will my water service be impacted?

During construction, customers may experience temporary water outages when the new water mains are tied into the existing system and when existing services are reconnected to new services. Advanced notice will be given for planned outages, and every effort will be made to keep outages brief.

What can be expected in terms of restoration?

During construction, work will occur in the road’s right-of-way. All disturbed areas will be restored to their previous condition, including asphalt patching, replacement of sod, sidewalk, driveways, etc., where impacted by construction activities.

After the completion of the utility work the roadway will be resurfaced. Please be aware that there will be a period of at least 90 days between the end of utility construction and the start of the resurfacing project. City and County partners will coordinate closely in an attempt to minimize impacts to the travelling public during this phase.
